On March 22, 1866, Notts County, a team founded in 1862, hosted the first-ever official football game.

A brief history of Nottingham Forest

Following a meeting when they opted for playing football instead, a few players were involved in the sport of shinney, which is comparable to hockey, created Forest in 1865.

When the club's founders decided to purchase twelve tasselled caps in "Garibaldi Red," colour, which was inspired by the leader of the well-known Italian "Redshirts" liberation fightersat the time in England, they formed their Red & White club colours.

Nottingham Forest Football Club had played at a number of stadiums, like Trent Bridge, now more commonly recognised as a famous cricket ground, before moving in 1898to their cherished City Ground home. When they were the first team that played with shin guards in 1874, also they were pioneers in that regard.

Before they moved to a permanent stadium, that season had been a turning point. Six years after joining the league, Forest won for the first occasion FA Cup by defeating Derby County 3-1 at Crystal Palace before 62,000 spectators. The win came against opponents who had humiliated Forest 5-0 just in less than one week before.

Due to the league being replaced by a regional league at the beginning of the 1st World War, Forest was saved from going bankrupt. Following the 2nd World War, great crowds attended games in an upbeat atmosphere.

Before a sixteen-year long wait for the most unusual turn of events happened in the history of the club, Forest won the FA Cup once more in 1959, defeating Luton Town in the final.Brian Clough, a legendary manager, came in January'75 and hired Peter Taylor, a brilliant ally, in July 1976.

In 1978, Forest won the 1st Division, the League Cup, and also in 1979 and 1980, the European Cup after securing promotion back to the top level.

In 1982, Taylor left and Clough stayed until 1992, but Forest wouldn't come close to matching that incredible success other than winning back-to-back League Cups between the year 1988 and 1990.

Forest spent its 14th straight season in the second division in 2021/22, but it was the final one of that stretch because they will return to the top division in 2022/23.
